The beginnings of the abbey

Founded in 910 by William the Pious, Duke of Aquitaine, the Abbey of Cluny was placed under the direct protection of the Pope. Its vocation was to become a prestigious spiritual and intellectual center, quickly establishing itself as one of the greatest monastic orders in Europe.

The splendor of the abbey

In the 12ᵉ century, Cluny Abbey enjoyed its golden age, spreading its influence across Europe with its 10,000 monks and numerous branches. It was during this period that the abbey church, the largest Christian church before the construction of St. Peter’s in Rome, saw the light of day.

Decline and destruction

From the 14ᵉ century onwards, Cluny Abbey underwent a gradual decline due to wars, economic difficulties and the emergence of the Cistercian order. During the French Revolution, the abbey was sold as national property and largely dismantled. Only a few buildings remain today.
