Discover Burgundy’s heritage: the Château de Cormatin

Nestled in the heart of Burgundy, the charming town of Cormatin is home to the Château de Cormatin, a period architectural treasure. A majestic witness to the 17th century, this historic jewel, set in lush green countryside and just a 15-minute walk from the campsite, invites history buffs and heritage enthusiasts on an unforgettable journey back in time. Discover the rich and fascinating history of this unique site during your stay in Cormatin.

History of the château

Château de Cormatin, located in southern Burgundy between Tournus and Cluny, stands majestically amid enchanting gardens and picturesque water features. When it was built in the early 17th century, the Marquis d’Huxelles aimed to demonstrate their power and prestige.

Indeed, the imposing edifice, flanked by a wide moat, turrets, a high embossed plinth, gunports and a drawbridge, is strikingly imposing. The French nobility of the 17th century found in it a perfect representative of their art of living. The interior staircase, inspired by the one at the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris, is “empty à la moderne”, fascinating by the breadth of its perspectives and the beauty of its play of light.

The famous “Salles dorées” are a resplendent testimony to the period, with floor-to-ceiling painted, sculpted and gilded decor, where furniture, paintings and tapestries blend in a harmony of color and refinement.

Château de Cormatin: cultural renaissance and praiseworthy restoration

Château de Cormatin has also experienced more recent periods of cultural effervescence. At the turn of the 20th century, a director of the Monte-Carlo Opera, the new owner of the property, invited celebrities such as Chaliapine, Caruso, Jules Massenet and Cécile Sorel to stay in rooms and salons furnished in a variety of styles, from Renaissance to Louis XIV.

Since 1980, the château has been restored to its original authenticity. Its “diligent maintenance” is praised by the most prestigious tourist guides. The gardens, redesigned over 11 hectares, feature flower beds, a boxwood labyrinth, an aviary, an open-air theater, a vegetable garden, fountains and water features, and are now among the most beautiful in France.
