Origins of Chardonnay vines and their evolution over time

Chardonnay is easily recognized by its typical aroma and unrivalled elegance. A native of Burgundy, Chardonnay has seduced gourmets the world over. The name Chardonnay comes from the Latin “Cardonnacum”, meaning a small village where thistles grow.

According to recent university research published in the United States, Chardonnay is a cross between Pinot Gris or Blanc and Gouais, one of the oldest grape varieties brought from Croatia by the Romans. Chardonnay has been grown in France since the early 20th century.

Catholic monks are said to have been largely responsible for the spread of Chardonnay throughout the French vineyards. Chardonnay owes its international renown to a handful of top-quality wines, such as Chablis, Corton Charlemagne and Pouilly-Fuissé, as well as blanc de blancs champagnes, especially those from the Côte des Blancs, made from Chardonnay alone.
