From Cluny to Tournus

An exceptional architectural heritage

Cormatin is ideally situated on the route of the 17 medieval fortresses and Renaissance châteaux that evoke Burgundy’s historic past.

  • Cluny : its abbey and art and archaeology museum, its medieval city, the Hôtel-Dieu and the famous national stud farms (equestrian shows in summer), the racecourse. In summer, Cluny offers night-time shows on the town’s history.
  • Château de Brancion: Discover the Middle Ages, a fortified castle built in the 10ᵉ century, medieval village and Romanesque church. Fun, costumed visit for 4/10 year-olds.
  • Tournus and its St-Philibert abbey: one of the only 11thᵉ century Romanesque monasteries preserved in Europe; the Hôtel-Dieu and the Greuze museum; the bicycle museum… And so much more to see on a pedestrian circuit.
  • Château et abbaye de la Ferté: You’ll discover 18ᵉ century interiors, parkland and magnificent outbuildings.
  • Berzé le Chatel: a magnificent 11th-century medieval fortress still inhabited by the same family and open to visitors with or without a guide. The setting for the Hollywood film “The Last Duel” starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the owners regularly host medieval festivals.
